Mullvad
Mullvad VPN AB was founded in 2009 in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a single guiding principle: minimal data collection. The service does not require an email address, name, or any personal information to sign up. Instead, users receive a randomly generated account number, and payment can be made anonymously via cash sent by post, cryptocurrency, or conventional methods.
Mullvad operates its own servers across more than 30 countries and has progressively moved to RAM-only (diskless) infrastructure to ensure that no data persists after a reboot. The company publishes regular transparency reports and has undergone multiple independent security audits. In 2023, Mullvad partnered with the Tor Project to release the Mullvad Browser, a privacy-hardened fork of Firefox.
The company is self-funded, employs roughly 50 people, and charges a flat monthly fee with no tiers, discounts, or upsells.
