Nextcloud

Germany·private·Founded 2016

Nextcloud GmbH was founded in 2016 in Stuttgart by Frank Karlitschek, previously the creator of ownCloud. The project started as a fork and quickly grew into one of the most widely deployed self-hosted collaboration platforms in Europe, used by the German federal government, French national education system, and numerous hospitals and universities.

The Nextcloud platform combines file synchronisation and sharing with Nextcloud Talk (video calls and chat), Nextcloud Office (collaborative document editing), and a rich app ecosystem covering calendars, contacts, mail, project boards, and more. Organisations can run Nextcloud on their own hardware or choose a managed hosting provider.

The company follows an open-core model: the server software is licensed under AGPLv3, with commercial support and enterprise features available through paid subscriptions. Nextcloud has received investment from European venture-capital sources.
