Proton
Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists who met at CERN, with the goal of building an internet where privacy is the default. The company is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and operates under Swiss privacy law, which provides some of the strongest data-protection guarantees in the world.
The Proton product suite includes Proton Mail (encrypted email), Proton VPN (no-logs VPN), Proton Drive (encrypted cloud storage), Proton Calendar (encrypted scheduling), and Proton Pass (password manager). All services use end-to-end encryption by default, meaning Proton itself cannot access user data.
Proton is privately held and has no external venture-capital investors. Its revenue comes entirely from paid subscriptions, aligning the company's incentives directly with the interests of its users rather than advertisers or third-party data brokers.
