Tutao GmbH was founded in 2011 in Hannover, Germany, to build email and calendar tools that encrypt as much user data as possible. Unlike most encrypted email services, Tuta encrypts not only message bodies but also subject lines, sender names, and contact details using its own protocol.

The company operates all its infrastructure in Germany and develops the client applications as open source. Tuta offers free accounts with limited storage alongside paid plans for individuals and businesses, including custom domain support and a secure contact form for external communication.

Tutao is self-funded and has no outside investors. The team remains small and focused, prioritising long-term privacy guarantees over rapid growth.
